The Ride to Conquer Cancer is a 2 day cycling event where thousands of participants ride a total of 200km to fundraise for the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR). All money that is raised gets sent immediately to the institute so that they can continue to research and identify specific genetic defects in cancer cells, and the environmental factors which cause the disease. In other words, the money raised by each and every rider accelerates the conquest of cancer.
The fact is that 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime, meaning that this cause is so important to many of us.
It all starts on the 19th of October when the cyclists leave Perth destined for their campsite near Pinjarra. The ride is fully supported and after sharing many awe inspiring stories and getting a good night’s rest the cyclists ride back to Perth on the 20th of October. Last year there were over 1200 riders, who raised more than $4.6 million in total – and that is just in WA (the ride is also run in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney). The aim this year is to top that and raise more than ever.
